Remarks of President Barack Obama A New Beginning Cairo, Egypt June 4, 2009I am honored to be in the timeless city of Cairo, and to be hosted by two remarkable institutions. For over a thousand years, Al-Azhar has stood as a beacon of Islamic learning, and for over a century, Cairo University has been a source of Egypt’s advancement. Together, you represent the harmony between tradition and progress. I am grateful for your hospitality, and the hospitality of the people of Egypt. Deputy Chief of Mission pays a visit to Plan 3000 in Santa CruzOn March 28, the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy, Christopher Lambert, visited the Hombres Nuevos foundation in Plan 3000 district of the city of Santa Cruz. During the visit, Lambert attended an assembly of community leaders. In these meetings, the leaders usually identify the challenges the community is facing and propose solutions. Then, they submit the proposals to the appropriate governmental institutons. This community-based participation intiative is supported by the U.S. Embassy, though its Agency for International Development (USAID) and by the Centro Boliviano Americano in Santa Cruz.

Famous speech delivered at dedication of Soldiers' National Cemetery President Abraham LincolnAbraham Lincoln, America’s 16th president, delivered his most famous speech — the Gettysburg Address — 145 years ago, on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. America was still in the throes of a civil war. Four months earlier, at the beginning of July, some 51,000 Confederate and Union soldiers had been captured, wounded or killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 and was the 16th President of the United States of America. As ,President he led the Union to victory in the American Civil War, and abolished slavery. He was assassinated on April 1865. This year, we celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of this important icon in American history. USAID, institution of the yearUSAID is La Paz daily El Diario's “Institution of the Year for its valuable cooperation to the country.” For the second consecutive time, USAID has received El Diario’s “Golden Page" award. The story of this inspiring award was on the front page of El Diario December 31st, with a large photo of USAID Acting Director Peter Natiello and the editor of El Diario, Jorge Carrasco. “This award greatly motivates us,” said Natiello. “I am going to dedicate it to USAID’s personnel, to individuals like coffee producer Zenobia Charca and to the Bolivians who have betted on a better future.”
NARCOTICS AFFAIRS SECTION GIVES RECOGNITION TO RED DEVILSThe Narcotics Affairs Section (NAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Bolivia gave a special recognition to several members of the Red Devils Air Task Force, who on December 25 rescued four people, two of them children, isolated by the flooding caused by the Piraí River, in Santa Cruz. The rescue took place near Km. 6 of the old road to Cochabamba. The crew of the helicopter in charge of the rescue included Major German Lavado Aguilera, Captain Valentin Camacho, technical officer Ruben Lopez Flores, Sergeant Limbert Vargas Tito, and SAR-FAB rescue specialist Ever Sejas. SUPPORT TO PUBLIC HEALTHOn Tuesday, December 16th, USAID Officer Mike Reilly participated in the new launching of the recently refurbished public hospital in the rural town of San Ignacio, 400 km far from Santa Cruz city. A joint investment between the local government and USAID will allow for this health center to offer improved services for more than 100 rural and indigenous communities living in surrounding areas.
