Ambassador's Visit to the CBA Highlights Scholarship Programs and U.S. Civil Rights
January 31, 2008. Ambassador Goldberg visited the Centro Boliviano Americano (CBA) of Santa Cruz to learn about the CBA's expansion project and to visit with students. After a presentation and tour with board members, the Ambassador donated a poster show on U.S. Civil Rights Leaders to the CBA. At a ceremony to honor recipients of the John F. Kennedy scholarships (for high school students in public schools with excellent academic and leadership qualifications), the Ambassador announced the “Martin Luther King: College Horizons” English scholarship program for high school students of Afro-Bolivian, indigenous, and campesino origins. The highlight of the ceremony was a speech by student Susana Torrico, on behalf of the JFK scholarship beneficiaries, who eloquently expressed the benefits of learning English.
The CBA Santa Cruz is a non-profit binational institution founded in 1958 and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The Embassy's Public Affairs Section works closely with the CBA to implement English scholarship programs and present cultural and educational programs. The CBA facility is currently going through major renovation of the old building and construction of a new building and stage. For more information: www.cba.com.bo
