Ambassador Inaugurates Improvements to Barrio El Porvenir Community Center
On May 30, Ambassador Goldberg inaugurated bathroom facilities and a kitchen funded by USAID’s Special Development Activity Fund for the community center in Villa Primero de Mayo’s Barrio El Porvenir. The facilities will benefit 60 children who will attend the community nursery, as well as other members of the community including the Club de Madres Santa Teresita.
In September 2006, through a cooperative agreement with USAID/Bolivia, ACDI/VOCA began implementing the Special Development Activity Fund (SDAF) for a period of three years. The SDAF implements small self-help projects that respond to the needs of low-income communities in urban and rural areas. These projects are characterized by their people-to-people approach and include substantial input from local communities, helping improve lives through initiatives that increase incomes, improve schools, and provide basic health and sanitation services.

In this case, the neighborhood committee from El Porvenir requested support to make improvements within their community center, which will include a daycare center for the Club de Madres Santa Teresita. USAID funded the construction of the bathroom and kitchen to give the center the ncessary amenitites to fully function. The total cost of the project was US$ 20,000, coming from an equal investment made by USAID and the municipality of Santa Cruz. The Prefecture will fund the furnishing and food for the children.
