Peace Corps Volunteer Supports Fisheries Development
 |
On February 1, Ambassador Goldberg visited Peace Corps Volunteer Jeffrey Albanese to learn about his work on a piscicultural project at the Escuela Salesiana's Instituto Superior de Agropecuaria in Muyurina. Jeffrey Albanese began work with the institute in 2006. Along with several professors and students, he began a project working with fish production, as part of the Peace Corp's Agricultural Extension program. The primary goals of the project are to promote fish production among students and professors, and also in local communities in the surrounding area in order to stimulate income generation. Pacu, Carp, and Sabalo are the primary species that are currently being produced. The project includes both artificial tanks made of cement and natural tanks dug into the ground. The project provides theoretical material for the students at the Instituto Superior Agropecuario Muyurina to complement their technical activities. Last year, several students from the institute completed their thesis on the topic of fish production.
