Martin Luther King, Jr. English Scholarships
The “College Horizons” English language scholarship program, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and the Centro Boliviano Americano, was officially inaugurated on March 19, 2007 in the La Paz CBA and will be expanded to include Santa Cruz CBA this February. The scholarships will contribute to the education of 40 Bolivian students of indigenous and Afro-Bolivian background living in Santa Cruz, who excel academically, are committed to their self-improvement, and have demonstrated leadership skills. The scholarship covers registration fees, books, tuition, and a transportation bonus.
The “Martin Luther King: College Horizons” language scholarships allow the grantees to study English for two years at the Centro Boliviano Americano. The scholarships also include the participation of volunteer mentors, who meet with the students once a month to share their knowledge and experience.
Interested students should apply directly at the Centro Boliviano Americano of Santa Cruz, located at Calle Cochabamba No. 66, Tel. 334-2299, website: www.cba.com.bo.  The deadline for applications is Friday the 29th of February.
Application materials needed include:  Application form, CV, 2 color photographs size 5 x 5, photocopy of your birth certificate or I.D. card, photocopy of your school records for your last two school years, letter of recommendation from the Director of your school or a teacher, and a letter explaining your motives for applying for the scholarship and why you should be chosen, your educational plans, and your plans for the future.

More about the scholarship program in La Paz

U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia Philip S. Goldberg presided over the inauguration ceremony and highlighted the role to be played by the mentors, who can become true role models for the students. “This is a program that fosters solidarity with these young students, who have great expectations to develop their own abilities. Any society needs people who devote a part of their time to activities that do not seek their own benefit, but the benefit of others, or the collective interest,” the Ambassador remarked.
Other objectives of this scholarship program are: Facilitate access to higher education for Afro-Bolivians, indigenous people, and other residents of rural areas within a supportive cultural environment; expand the students’ horizons and help them set their own goals; contribute to developing the students’ basic skills so that they can complete university studies, apply for scholarships, and successfully enter university programs locally or in the United States; establish community networks so that students support one another by sharing their experience and encourage future generations to pursue higher education.
